microSD memory prices drop |
MicroSD Memory microSD is a small, removable flash memory card format originally based on the SanDisk TransFlash card format. It is primarily used in mobile phones, but because of its size and increasing capacity it is also being used in handheld GPS devices, portable audio players, flashcards for Nintendo DS, and expandable USB flash memory drives. At 15mm x 11 mm x 0.7mm about the size of a fingernail it is currently the smallest memory card format commercially available. It is about one quarter of the size of a standard SD card but can be inserted into an adapter which allows the card to be used in devices with an SD card slot.
On May 17, 2007, Samsung announced that they had developed an 8 GB model of the MicroSD card. This version exceeds current storage capacities on microsd cards as well as data write speeds with upwards of 4 MB/s. "This is also much faster than the SD Speed Class 2 designation carried by most competing microSD cards currently on the market."
