Sony Ericsson P990i NEW firmware |
|
NEW firmware Sony Ericsson released new firmware for the M600i and P990i
smartphones. M600i firmware version is now R5A12 and P990i version is
R4A13. New firmware brings bug fixes and more free operating memory. A very big improvement in the way P990 handles it's running tasks in the case it runs out of memory! Until now, hitting the bottom of the RAM, all running applications would get shut down in order to free ram. Now, with the current firmware, it kills tasks one by one, starting with the oldest used first! So if you start messaging for example, than use other apps, make it go low on RAM, it will kill your messaging app (oldest running unused application) and only that in the first instance, in order to free some ram. Needles to say this seems big as it is possible to do multitasking now between simple apps and it definitively feels like a better phone!
This firmware is a definite step in the right direction, although they surely made us wait too much for it. Looking very forward for the next firmware, that will maybe make the P990 what it was supposed to be in the first place!
Much awaited features in next firmware are:
- better memory management, give users as much free ram as possible with no memory leaks
- disable transition option (this way we could stop using that video trick and free up some more ram)
- flip closed mode still excessively slow in some applications (like setting up a reminder - painfully slow task)
- maybe some sort of plugin for the _very_big_and_empty_ main screen in Flip Open mode!
Error, missing joomlaboard config file!
The CDA strings shows for which region your phone was produced, and they are updated accordingly:
162007/1 Generic World 1
162007/2 Generic World 2
162007/3 Generic World 3
162008/1 Swisscom Switzerland
162008/20 Vodafone Germany
162008/3 Mobilkom Austria
162008/50 T-mobile Hungary
162008/65 Generic Italy
162008/66 Generic Netherlands
162008/87 Generic Germany
162008/91 Vodafone UK
So basically the update depends if your phone has generic CDA string. If you have it you are not actually dependant on the network. Some networks are slowly allowing updates of the software so there4 you might end up with an older firmware like R3A01 or something.
